South Asia’s press freedom analysis

Challenge: Communicate the state of press freedom across eight South Asian countries over a 10 year period while avoiding the “spaghetti graph” effect of overlapping trend lines.

Design decisions: I chose to focus only on the South Asian region for this design. The map sahows that the South Asian countries do not enjoy a free press. I wanted to compare the freedom of press in South Asian countries for a 10 year period.

After testing multiple visualisation approaches, from small multiple line graphs to slope graphs, I decided to go with a solution shows all the data and highlights a country at the same time. This approach allowed me to show each country’s trend on it own and also show the other countries in the background, allowing for comparison.

The result: The visualisation reveals that while India has slightly better press freedom, no South Asian country enjoys a true free press. The design makes it easy to identify both regional patterns and individual country trajectories.
